The core meaning of Legacies is the internal struggle to define one's own identity against the crushing weight of a pre-determined heritage. The creators aimed to explore whether the sins of the father must inevitably be inherited by the child. Through Hope Mikaelson and the Saltzman twins, the series argues that while lineage provides the starting point, choice and found family are the true architects of destiny. It is a story about the transition from being a product of one's past to becoming a protector of the future, emphasizing that even the most "monstrous" origins can be forged into a force for good.
