To find and comfort the sad man from her dreams, and to spread love to everyone she meets, without regard for who they are supposed to be.

She begins as an ordinary five-year-old with an extraordinary dream and a book to write. Illness strips away her plans, but instead of shrinking she expands into the role she dreamed of — befriending Edgar, then accepting her own death with a composure that outstrips every adult in the film, and converting that acceptance into a final act of giving.

Initially survival and self-protection; ultimately the desire to be forgiven by his family and to deserve the life he has been handed.

Introduced as a stubborn convict facing kidney failure and a ruined relationship with his family, Edgar resists Lucy's attention before the friendship dismantles his defenses. He moves from a man waiting to die inside two sentences to a man given a second chance — reconnecting with his family and living as the keeper of Lucy's memory.

To watch over Lucy and to make sure the work she was sent to do is completed.

A presence rather than a developing character, he assists Lucy in bringing about the miracles that change Edgar's heart, and in the final scenes takes on his most tender function — walking Lucy hand-in-hand out of this life and into the next.
