The Planet Vesta
Vesta symbolizes the raw, amoral power of nature. It is not evil or good; it simply exists as a complex, interconnected system of life and death. It acts as a crucible, testing the survivors and reflecting their inner natures back at them. For Ursula, it is a source of wonder and knowledge; for Kamen, it becomes a physical manifestation of his inner demons. It represents an ecosystem where humanity is not the dominant species.
The entire series is set on Vesta, making it the most dominant symbol. Every plot point and character arc is dictated by the survivors' interactions with its bizarre flora and fauna. From the creatures used as tools to the parasites that threaten to consume them, the planet is an active character throughout all 12 episodes.
Levi's Transformation
Levi's evolution from a purely technological robot to a bio-mechanical being symbolizes the potential for a harmonious synthesis between technology and nature. Where humans struggle to adapt, Levi, a non-biological entity, fully integrates with Vesta's ecosystem, representing a new path forward—one of adaptation rather than resistance. It shows that individuality and sentience can arise from this merging.
Throughout the series, Levi is gradually affected by a yellow goo from the planet. After being destroyed, it is reborn through the planet's symbiotic processes, becoming a key player in the final episodes by confronting the corrupted Hollow and showcasing its newfound connection to Vesta's life force.
The Creature Hollow
Hollow initially represents a neutral, instinct-driven part of Vesta's ecosystem.
