At first, perfection as self-protection and a way to earn love. Later, a wish to be loved as herself and to care for the person who sees her.

She starts out as the school's untouchable "Angel," polished and distant. Taking care of Amane lets her show her real personality. She reveals that her parents neglected her despite everything she achieved, and gradually learns to rely on someone. By the end of Season 1 she openly calls Amane a person very dear to her. Season 2 continues their relationship as a couple.

At first just getting by and keeping his distance. Later, protecting Mahiru and becoming a person who deserves her.

He begins as a messy student living alone with low self-esteem, the "good-for-nothing" of the Japanese title. Mahiru's care and belief in him help him see his own worth. His Season 1 arc peaks when he says goodbye to his cowardice, and he goes on to become someone who supports her in return.

Wants his friend to be happy and open up.

Amane's easygoing best friend. He discovers the neighbor situation when he and Chitose visit at Christmas, and from then on he teases and encourages Amane toward honesty.

Being a genuine friend to Mahiru and nudging the couple together.

Itsuki's girlfriend. She becomes Mahiru's first real friend, someone who treats her as a normal girl rather than an angel.

Genuine friendship despite his popularity.

A popular classmate who joins the friend group and offers a mirror to Amane's insecurity about being seen with someone admired.
