Sam begins as a decorated first-time astronaut who has survived the unsurvivable, moves through paranoid conviction that something extraterrestrial followed her home, and ends by discovering that the thing she feared was never outside her. Her arc runs from survivor to specimen to something else entirely, closing with a deliberate, grief-heavy farewell to her Earth family.

Containment of an unexplained event, and control of the narrative around it — duty to the institution before duty to the woman.

Harris arranges Sam's placement in the high-security house under intense NASA surveillance, positioning himself as protector and warden at once. His authority gives the film its second layer of threat: even if nothing alien were present, the apparatus around Sam would still be closing.

To get his wife back and keep his family intact, even as the evidence turns against both hopes.

Mark is the tether to the human world Sam is trying to return to, and the person forced to reconcile the wife he remembers with the woman under observation. He is present for the film's final revelation, which reframes his entire marriage retroactively.

To have her mother home and unchanged, a wish the film systematically dismantles.

The child at the emotional center of the story, Izzy registers her mother's strangeness before the adults will name it. She is one of the two people who see Sam's true form in the climax, and the last person Sam says goodbye to — making her the film's true measure of what is lost.
