War of the Worlds — Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Analysis

Throughout the story, Radford tracks "The Disruptor," a cyber-hacker leaking classified data on government surveillance. When meteor strikes unleash alien tripods, Radford discovers the extra-terrestrials were not invading for land, but were drawn by Earth's massive digital data footprint, seeking to siphon and eradicate human information systems.

Radford realizes the tripods share a centralized cyber network. By creating a lethal computer virus payload, he can disable the tripods remotely. However, uploading the payload requires an uncorrupted physical thumb drive located miles away. In the film’s climax, an Amazon delivery driver navigates urban tripods, using an Amazon delivery drone to drop the thumb drive directly into Radford’s facility. Radford plugs in the drive, uploads the cyber virus ("computer AIDS") to the alien network, instantly deactivating every tripod on Earth and saving humanity from his desk workstation.

Alternative Interpretations

Unintentional Corporate Satire: Many critics and viewers interpret the movie as an accidental parody of corporate capitalism, where big-tech infrastructure and e-commerce delivery networks save humanity.

Techno-Paranoia Parable: A literal reading views the film as a cautionary tale warning that humanity's obsession with harvesting data will attract advanced entity predators targeting information assets.

Pandemic Isolation Allegory: The protagonist sitting trapped at a desk watching external collapse through monitors functions as a direct metaphor for the psychological confinement experienced during global lockdowns.
