The Ultimate Twist & Truth of the Borderland: At the end of Season 2, the truth behind the entire series is revealed. A meteorite exploded directly over Tokyo's Shibuya district. Every person transported to the Borderland was a victim caught in the blast wave who suffered cardiac arrest. The "Borderland" is a collective near-death realm—a purgatory situated between life and death. Winning games and extending "visas" represented the body's internal struggle to maintain a pulse. Those who died in the Borderland died of their injuries in real-world hospitals. Upon beating the final "Queen of Hearts" game, players were offered a choice: accept permanent citizenship in the Borderland or decline. Those who declined woke up in Tokyo hospitals minutes after the impact, remembering nothing of the games or each other, yet retaining the emotional growth and bonds forged in the Borderland.
Season 3 Arc: Four years after the meteorite strike, Arisu and Usagi are married in the real world. However, Usagi is drawn back into the Borderland through the manipulation of Ryūji, an afterlife researcher. Willing to risk his life again, Arisu re-enters the realm to save her. Facing a new series of death games managed by former players turned Citizens (Banda and Yaba), Arisu confronts the mystery of the "Joker". By reaffirming their will to live together, Arisu and Usagi escape the realm one final time, securing their future in the waking world.
