Yami's motivation is to create a place where outcasts can belong and thrive, reflecting his own experience of being taken in by Julius. He seeks to foster the potential he sees in others, especially Asta, pushing them to become stronger than he is.

Yami is the foreign-born captain of the Black Bulls, a gruff, seemingly lazy man who values actions over words and lineage. He often threatens his squad members but is fiercely protective of them. His arc involves revealing his past as a shipwrecked outsider who was accepted by the Wizard King, Julius Novachrono.
