• The Murder Revelation: So-young is revealed to have murdered the baby's biological father—a wealthy client from her past as a sex worker—after he pressured her to terminate the pregnancy and attempted violence against her.
• The Gangster Threat: The murdered man’s wealthy widow hires gangsters to track down baby Woo-sung to secure her late husband's inheritance and seek vengeance on So-young.
• Sang-hyeon’s Sacrifice: In the climax, Sang-hyeon secretly meets the lead gangster Tae-ho. Realizing the child and So-young will never be safe while the syndicate pursues them, Sang-hyeon murders Tae-ho, takes the syndicate's payoff money, and disappears into the shadows as a permanent fugitive to eliminate the threat.
• The Sting and Surrender: Dong-soo meets the final prospective adoptive couple—a genuinely loving pair arranged without financial extortion—and willingly allows himself to be arrested by Soo-jin to protect So-young, while So-young turns herself in voluntarily for the manslaughter of the child's father.

The Resolution (3 Years Later): So-young is released on parole and works at a laundromat. Detective Soo-jin, transformed by the case, fosters Woo-sung and invites Dong-soo, Hae-jin, and So-young to meet at a park. In the final shot, Sang-hyeon's van is seen watching from a distance, suggesting that though legally separated, their shared bond remains intact.

The ending lends itself to three distinct readings:

• The Optimistic Reading (Spiritual Kinship Endures): In the film’s final sequence, three years have passed. So-young is paroled and working, Woo-sung is in the loving foster care of Detective Soo-jin and her husband, Dong-soo is completing his term, and Sang-hyeon’s laundromat van is seen parked nearby. This interpretation views the makeshift family not as broken, but as an invisible web of collective guardians who all play a role in raising Woo-sung.
• The Melancholic / Systemic Reading (The Inevitable Dissolution): A more grounded reading argues that society’s legal and class boundaries make it impossible for marginalized people to maintain their idyllic sanctuary. Sang-hyeon is a fugitive murderer who can never re-enter mainstream society, So-young is a branded ex-felon, and Woo-sung must grow up without knowing his biological roots directly.
• The Moral Inversion Reading: The ending completes the inversion of moral authority. The police, who initially manipulated circumstances to facilitate a crime for career advancement, end up becoming the child's actual caretakers, while the "criminals" prove to be the ethical agents who saved Woo-sung from underworld syndicates.
