The film opens with Yong-nam’s lingering shame of failing job interviews and being avoided by his nephew. For his mother Hyeon-ok’s 70th birthday, he books the Cloud Garden banquet hall because his college crush, Eui-ju, works there. Reconnecting with Eui-ju, he lies about being a thriving venture businessman.

A disgruntled scientist releases an experimental, lethal synthetic gas from a tanker truck on the street below. The gas is corrosive to skin and fatal within minutes. Yong-nam's sister, Jung-hyun, steps outside, inhales the toxic fumes, and sustains serious chemical burns and respiratory failure. Yong-nam carries her inside to safety as the family retreats upward. Finding the rooftop door locked and its key trapped downstairs in a gas-filled office, Yong-nam ties an ordinary rope around his waist, smashes a window, and scales the exterior high-rise wall to reach the roof and unlock the door from outside.

The family signals a rescue helicopter by constructing an SOS sign with banquet lights and chanting Morse code ("따따따 따-따-따 따따따"). Due to basket weight restrictions, only Yong-nam's family and an injured relative can board, forcing Yong-nam and Eui-ju to stay behind. They construct improvised hazmat gear out of industrial trash bags, duct tape, and limited 10–15 minute gas masks, dashing across rooftops to reach a taller building.

When a second rescue helicopter arrives, Yong-nam and Eui-ju notice trapped hagwon academy students across the street unable to break their reinforced windows. Weeping with fear, they wave the helicopter away to save the children instead. Stranded and pursued by the rising gas, their skyline leap is picked up by civilian camera drones and live-streamed nationwide. Mobilized drone hobbyists fly into the zone, creating wind streams to disperse localized gas and illuminating paths across building gaps.

At a high-rise construction crane, the pair scrambles up the crane boom arm and leaps across a vast chasm secured by a cable line, vanishing into the mist. They survive the swing, are winched up by emergency rescue crews, and are reunited with their families on the ground. Yong-nam refuses money from his tearful father, his mother embraces him with pride, and Eui-ju hands Yong-nam her climbing carabiner, calling it "too heavy" and telling him to return it later, confirming their shared future.

The Generational Allegory: Many critics view the toxic gas not as an isolated disaster, but as the accumulated toxic residue of older generations' socio-economic choices. The older generation is rescued first by military helicopters, leaving the young adults stranded on precarious rooftops to fend for themselves using improvised waste bags.

The Critique of Corporate Urban Infrastructure: Another reading focuses on urban design: how modern cities prioritize commerce and privatization over public safety. Locked rooftop doors—instituted to keep out youths or deter suicides—transform modern buildings into vertical traps during emergencies.

Subversion of Traditional Masculine Rescue: The dynamic between Yong-nam and Eui-ju avoids the "damsel in distress" formula. Eui-ju is equal to—and often calmer than—Yong-nam. Their survival is a co-operative venture, reflecting evolving views on gender equality and modern partnership.
