Given - Ending Explained

The "Given" movie climaxes with the band's performance at the festival audition. Mafuyu, inspired by the emotional turmoil between Akihiko, Haruki, and Ugetsu, has written a new song. As the band performs, flashbacks reveal the full, painful history of Akihiko and Ugetsu's relationship, culminating in a violent fight that leads Akihiko to seek refuge at Haruki's apartment. It is during this time that a drunken and distraught Akihiko makes an unwanted sexual advance on Haruki, creating a deep rift between them. The performance of Mafuyu's song acts as a catalyst for catharsis. The lyrics resonate deeply with Ugetsu, who is in the audience, and he finally understands that he needs to let Akihiko go for both of their sakes. After the show, Akihiko and Ugetsu have a final, definitive breakup. Akihiko then dedicates himself to self-improvement; he cuts his hair, gets rid of his piercings, moves into his own apartment, and begins seriously practicing the violin again. The film ends with a changed Akihiko earnestly confessing his love to Haruki, who accepts, marking the true beginning of their relationship on healthier terms.
