Hunting Season — Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Analysis

The plot is set into motion when Alejandro's cartel abducts January and Lizzie over connections to an associate named Jensen; Lizzie is murdered, but January escapes wounded into the river. When Bowdrie attempts to discreetly arrange medical care via Sheriff Brake, it is revealed that local law enforcement is compromised by Detective Davenport, who secretly works for Alejandro and murders Brake to protect the operation.

Before launching his defense, Bowdrie leaves a confession letter to Tag revealing that her mother did not die when she was three, but is alive in prison serving a lengthy sentence for severe crimes. Bowdrie captures Davenport and tortures him with a running lawn mower to uncover the cartel's plans. Together with Tag and January, Bowdrie coordinates a counterstrike, systematically eliminating Alejandro's hit squad and killing Alejandro. The film concludes with their isolation permanently broken, but their family bond solidified by truth and survival.

Alternative Interpretations

Some viewers interpret Bowdrie's complete isolation not as a noble protective shield, but as an unhealthy prison born of cowardice and unresolved trauma, stunting Tag's social development under the guise of safety. Another reading suggests that Bowdrie's peaceful lifestyle was merely a facade; his effortless return to brutal tactical violence and torture reveals that his isolation was a cage holding back a dormant predator.
