Set in 1846 during the twilight era of Caribbean piracy, The Bluff follows Ercell Bodden, a woman who has hidden her notorious former life as the pirate "Bloody Mary". Living in quiet isolation on the rugged island of Cayman Brac, Ercell devotes herself to raising her physically disabled son, Isaac, and looking after her headstrong sister-in-law, Elizabeth, while awaiting the delayed return of her seafaring husband, Captain T.H. Bodden.
The tranquil existence of the island community is shattered when the brutal pirate Captain Connor intercepts T.H.’s vessel and discovers marked gold bars stolen from him years prior. Taking T.H. hostage, Connor and his bloodthirsty crew launch an invasion on Cayman Brac to retrieve the treasure and settle a personal score with Ercell, whose lethal past was Connor's own creation.
Caught between protecting her family and concealing the violent history she abandoned, Ercell is forced to weaponize her surroundings. Utilizing guerrilla tactics, improvised traps, and lethal swordsmanship, she orchestrates a desperate defense across the island's coastal bluffs and subterranean caverns, fighting to ensure her family's survival before Connor razes Cayman Brac entirely.
