Garraty’s True Motive: Ray Garraty did not enter the Walk for fame or fortune. His father was an anti-authoritarian dissenter executed by the Major. Garraty entered so he could use his winner's wish to obtain a military carbine and assassinate the Major on live broadcast.
Stebbins’ Secret Identity: Stebbins (#38), who marches in silence near the back, reveals to Garraty and McVries that he is one of the Major’s many illegitimate sons. His goal was to win so his wish would force his father to acknowledge him and let him live in his home. However, Stebbins suddenly collapses from internal organ failure at mile 326, placing 3rd.
Garraty’s Sacrifice: Down to Garraty and McVries, Garraty realizes he no longer wants to kill out of hatred. Knowing McVries sees hope in the world while Garraty is physically and mentally broken, Garraty chooses to stop walking. He tells Pete "I can't see it. You can" and confesses his love before falling behind and surrendering.
The Climax & Final Twist: Pete McVries is declared the official winner. As the Major approaches to present the prize and ask for his wish, McVries asks for the exact item Garraty wanted: a carbine rifle. The Major hands him the rifle, expecting a ceremonial salute; instead, McVries raises the weapon and shoots the Major dead. McVries turns around and begins walking down the empty highway as all crowd noise, soldiers, and surroundings fade into surreal silence.
