Discharged, he is recruited into CIA Special Operations, where he is rewarded for exactly the instincts the Navy punished. Across the season he learns tradecraft, absorbs the logic of deniability, and by the finale is scripting the elimination of Cyrus, Artem and the exposure of Haverford before walking back into the Agency. The arc is not redemption but accommodation: he ends the season more powerful, more useful and further from the man who could be shocked.

Every scene they share plays double: as friendship, and as the seed of the betrayal viewers already know is coming.
