Ava uses her position in the civilian Body Retrieval Unit to steal a vehicle with Clay and enter high-risk forbidden zones south of Hobart. As they venture deeper, they discover that the corpses do not follow traditional viral zombie behavior; instead, neural jolts cause them to grind their teeth, twitch, and become increasingly violent the longer they remain active, forcing military units to systematically cull them.
When Ava finally tracks down Mitch's corpse in the restricted territory, her romanticized expectations shatter: Mitch never came back online, and she discovers evidence that he was having an affair prior to the disaster. Realizing the marriage she risked her life for was already broken, Ava chooses not to bury Mitch in the contaminated soil or leave him to the military. Instead, she and Clay place his body on a motorboat and set it ablaze.
Immediately following the pyre, Ava and Clay encounter a dying, reanimated pregnant woman who gives birth before collapsing permanently. Ava picks up the living newborn, choosing to step away from the dead past and protect new life as they exit the wasteland.
