The brilliance of Obsession lies in its gradual reveal of Bear's true villainy. What begins as a sympathetic crush turns fatal when Nikki, possessed by the wish, discovers Bear's friend Sarah in her car. After Sarah reveals to Bear that Nikki and Ian used to secretly sleep together, Nikki violently murders Sarah to protect her unhinged relationship with Bear. As the horror escalates, Bear learns through chilling moments—like the "sleep-talking" scene where real Nikki begs him to kill her—that he hasn't won her over; he has imprisoned her.
The climax is utterly bleak. Unable to undo the wish because he has already used his turn on the Willow, Bear locks himself in a bathroom as a psychotic Nikki pounds on the door, screaming that they will be together forever. Refusing to live with the terrifying consequences of his entitlement, and too cowardly to face the situation, Bear swallows the exact same prescription pills that killed his cat at the start of the film. He hallucinates a romantic reunion with Nikki and dies of an overdose. Bear escapes the nightmare, but the curse breaks upon his death, leaving the real Nikki to wake up mentally destroyed, forced to live with the severe trauma of what her body was made to do.
