A Prophet — Characters & Cast

Initially pure survival: do what is demanded or die. This hardens into a determination to never be anyone's dog again — to own the information, the routes and the people that others once used to own him.

Begins at nineteen, illiterate, friendless and of Maghrebi descent, sentenced to six years for attacking police officers. Coerced into murder, he becomes a Corsican associate and drug trafficker, learns to read, secretly masters Corsican, builds his own network on prison leave, and ingratiates himself with the Maghrebi crime milieu. He ends the film with education, a renewed spiritual life and an empire — a petty criminal remade by the institution into a kingpin.

Retaining control of a territory and an organisation from inside a cell; obedience matters to him as much as profit, because obedience is the last proof that he is still the boss.

Rules the prison's Corsican bloc by fear when the film opens, treating Malik as a disposable tool. Audiard described him as "an ogre in charge of a kingdom of spiders." As his men are released or drift away, his court empties and he grows increasingly isolated and dependent on the very servant he humiliated — an ogre shrinking inside his own kingdom.

Ambiguous by design: read as Malik's conscience, he demands to be remembered; read as a genuine visitation, he seems to want his killer to become something more than a killer.

A Muslim inmate and informant whose murder the Corsicans force on Malik. He then persists as a presence in Malik's cell, throat marked by razor cuts and clothes smouldering with blue flame — not accusing but conversing, offering insight into other prisoners and foreknowledge of events. He is both the crime Malik can never undo and the source of the gift that defines the title.

Building a life and providing for his family, which pulls him toward Malik's enterprise even as it represents everything Malik's world threatens.

A fellow inmate who becomes Malik's closest friend inside and, after his own release, his ally on the outside — the human infrastructure of Malik's expanding operation and his only real attachment.

Profit and self-preservation, negotiated with whoever is currently strongest.

A dealer on the outside who becomes a node in Malik's growing business, one of the relationships that lets a prisoner build an economy beyond the walls. He embodies the film's argument that the sentence is no longer a boundary once a man knows how to trade across it.
