Begins with a single object-level goal: find her head and become whole. It evolves into something harder to name — the wish to keep the attachments she built while headless, and the growing suspicion that the life she made in Japan matters more than the thing she lost.

Introduced as the Black Rider, a Dullahan from Ireland who came to Japan hunting the head that was stolen from her, Celty spends season one defined by lack. Across ×2 her search is repeatedly instrumentalised by others, and as the Ikebukuro crowd grows more dangerous she shifts from courier and observer to one of the few figures actively protecting the city. Her arc completes in the final cour, where the recovery of her head is bound up with the theme of reunion that the ending places above resolution — she ends less a legend than a person with a life.

Starts as pure appetite for a life that isn't boring; hardens into the need to be indispensable to the thing he created, and finally into the far more frightening desire to be honestly seen by the two people he has been deceiving.

He arrives in Ikebukuro at Masaomi's invitation, longing for the excitement of the big city, and the sight of the Black Rider gives him his first taste of the extraordinary. That exhilaration is the seed of everything that follows: the meek transfer student is revealed to be the founder of the Dollars, and across ×2 he slides from curator of a harmless crowd into someone willing to tighten his grip on it. The Final Curtain arc pushes his double life to breaking point and forces him back into the same room as the friends he lied to.

Professes to love humanity in the aggregate while treating individuals as moves; his drive shifts over the run from curiosity to something closer to compulsion, as Ikebukuro repeatedly refuses to behave like a system he can solve.

The information broker begins as season one's gleeful destabiliser, feeding rumours into the city to see what grows. ×2 steadily strips the comedy off him: the consequences of his games — a hit-and-run that leaves Kyōhei fighting for his life, Shizuo's arrest, escalating gang violence — accumulate until the distance he keeps from his own experiments collapses. To Izaya it remains a game in which he enjoys playing god; to the people whose lives he has been arranging it has become a matter of life and death, and the final arc makes him live inside that gap.

Initially to protect his new friend from the world he came from; then to protect the person he loves; ultimately to stop protecting anyone through lies and simply be present.

He is the grinning tour guide who brings Mikado to Ikebukuro, and the mask slips slowly. Season one uncovers his history with the colour gangs and the guilt that made him abandon it; he leaves the city carrying a promise to come back honest. His return in ×2 is the series' test of whether a person can re-enter a life they ran from, and the final arc's reunion of the three friends is largely his achievement — the one character whose whole arc is about refusing to let a secret stand in for a self.

Begins as the desire to remain unnoticed and unhurt; becomes the wish to love the way other people do rather than the way the sword does, and finally the resolve to stand with Mikado and Masaomi rather than between them.

Introduced as a reserved classmate, Anri is revealed to be tied to Saika, the cursed blade whose love expresses itself through cutting. Season one frames this as a secret to survive; ×2 makes it a responsibility, as the blade's power to conscript a crowd turns her into one of the few people who can restrain it — the hypnosis surrounding Saika becomes one of the destabilising forces of the concluding cour. Her arc is the slow conversion of a curse into an act of care, and of a girl who felt nothing into someone who chooses her attachments.
