The film establishes that Sergei’s abilities originate from a mystical transfusion: after being left for dead by Nikolai during an African lion attack, the dying beast's blood mixes into Sergei’s lacerations, endowing him with heightened physical prowess and an instinctual rapport with animals. As an adult, Sergei pursues poachers and syndicates alongside Calypso and rescues Dmitri. However, his crusade destabilizes the criminal landscape, triggering a turf war orchestrated by the Foreigner and Aleksei Sytsevich, the latter mutating his skin into an armored, grey rhino hide.
During the climax, Sergei confronts and lethally executes his father Nikolai, defeats the Foreigner, and brutally overpowers the mutated Rhino through primal traps and violence. The concluding twist is psychological: Dmitri, alienated and terrified by Sergei’s destructive aura, uses his newfound shapeshifting talents to vanish into the shadows as the Chameleon. Sergei dons his comic-accurate fur-lined lion vest and retreats into the wilderness, fully embracing his destiny as Kraven the Hunter.
