Starts as Tommy's son insisting on learning the patch from the bottom, on a crew, rather than inheriting a desk. The industry teaches him fast, through fire and death, and his ambition steadily shifts toward running his own operation.

His arc darkens decisively in season two: after an attack on Ariana, Cooper beats the assailant, who later dies of those injuries, leaving Cooper charged with murder even as he becomes his father's partner in the new company. He ends the run as both heir apparent and defendant.

Tommy's ex-wife arrives as pure disruption, moving back into his orbit and turning his stripped-down life into a household again. Early reviews criticized how thinly the show's women were drawn in season one, calling them cookie-cutter, and Angela absorbed much of that critique.

Weakened by multiple heart attacks, he dies off screen in his hospital bed, an anticlimax that is exactly the point: the most powerful man in the Basin exits without a scene, and the vacuum he leaves reshapes the entire series.
