Logan - Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Analysis

The film concludes with the death of both lead characters. Charles Xavier is killed by X-24, a clone of Logan, which is a cruel irony as Charles dies thinking he is finally being cared for by the 'real' Logan. The truth behind the absence of mutants is revealed: Alkali-Transigen suppressed the mutant gene through corn syrup and food additives while breeding their own controlled mutants in labs. In the finale, Logan injects a massive dose of serum to regain his youth for one last fight. He defeats the Reavers but is ultimately impaled by X-24. Laura kills X-24 with an adamantium bullet, and Logan dies in her arms, finally feeling the 'peace' Charles wanted for him. The children cross the border into Canada, leaving the legacy of the X-Men behind them.

Alternative Interpretations

Some viewers interpret the film through a political lens, viewing Logan as a representative of an older, fading America protecting the 'new' America (represented by the Latina Laura) from a fascistic corporate entity. Another interpretation suggests the entire film is a meta-commentary on the actor's relationship with the role; Logan’s failing body mirrors the physical toll playing the character took on Hugh Jackman over 17 years. A more cynical reading posits that the 'Eden' the children seek doesn't actually exist and that the ending is merely a temporary reprieve in a world that will eventually hunt them down as well.
