In high school, Kim Jo-jo secretly battles crushing debt and survivor's guilt following her parents' murder-suicide pact on Jeju Island, from which she alone escaped. When wealthy model Hwang Sun-oh transfers in, he falls deeply in love with Jo-jo, despite his best friend Lee Hye-yeong having harbored a silent crush on her for months. Jo-jo and Sun-oh begin dating, finding solace in each other's emotional voids. However, after a severe motorcycle accident and rising financial and family pressures, Jo-jo experiences overwhelming panic that her broken life will ruin Sun-oh. She confides in Duk-gu, a quiet classmate and tech genius who created the Love Alarm app out of unrequited love for Jo-jo’s cousin, Gul-mi. Duk-gu codes an exclusive, irreversible Shield into Jo-jo's app, which blocks her from ever ringing anyone’s alarm. Jo-jo uses this shield to coldly demonstrate to Sun-oh that she no longer loves him, breaking his heart and shattering their relationship. Duk-gu subsequently disappears, presumed dead.
Four years later, the trio reunites as adults. Sun-oh is trapped in a superficial, unfulfilled relationship with socialite Yuk-jo, unable to ring her alarm because he is still haunted by Jo-jo’s sudden rejection. Meanwhile, Hye-yeong reconnects with Jo-jo, deliberately courting her the traditional way—through time, kindness, and direct conversation, rather than relying on the app. Jo-jo discovers that Duk-gu is alive and seeks his help to remove the Shield. Instead, she is initially given the Spear, a feature enabling her to force-ring another's app. When a violent fanatic connected to Jo-jo's anonymous art account stirs crisis, Jo-jo realizes that relying on digital artifacts (the Shield and the Spear) is a cowardly evasion of truth.
In the climax, Jo-jo travels to Jeju Island to confront her childhood trauma, finally letting go of her survival guilt. She meets Sun-oh for an honest conversation, acknowledging that while they truly loved each other in high school, their time has passed, granting him the closure needed to embrace Yuk-jo. With her heart healed, Jo-jo chooses Hye-yeong; the series concludes with her expressing unmediated, sincere love to Hye-yeong as both step forward into an authentic future together.
