Miraculous World: Shanghai - The Legend of Ladydragon - Ending Explained
⚠️ Spoiler Analysis
The central twist of the film is the revelation that Marinette's new friend, Fei, is the very person who robbed her upon her arrival in Shanghai. Fei stole Marinette's belongings, including the Ladybug earrings, to sell them to a shady pawn shop owner named Cash. Cash is the man who holds Fei's stolen bracelet, the key to the sacred cave, and he is extorting her.
It is further revealed that Hawk Moth has been manipulating events from the beginning. He is the one who acquired Fei's bracelet 15 years prior and has been waiting for a specific magical eclipse to use it. He travels to Shanghai not just for his brand opening but to finally claim the Prodigious. Cash, the pawn shop owner, is akumatized by Hawk Moth into 'King Cash', a villain with the power to turn things to gold. During the final confrontation inside the sacred cave, Fei, wracked with guilt and inspired by Marinette's selflessness, reclaims the Prodigious and transforms into the superhero Ladydragon. To defeat King Cash, Ladydragon must overcome her desire for revenge and embrace the virtues of a true hero, which allows her to unlock the powerful Dragon transformation. After the villain is defeated and the Akuma purified, the ancient guardian of the Prodigious, Mei Shi, is revealed to be the embodiment of the lion Renling. He entrusts the Prodigious to Fei permanently. In the end, Fei is informally adopted by Marinette's Uncle Wang, finding a new family.
Alternative Interpretations
One alternative interpretation focuses on the character of Gabriel Agreste. His line, "What I started 15 years ago, I will finish tomorrow," has led to significant fan speculation. While the film presents this as part of his long-term plan to acquire power, some viewers interpret this as evidence that Gabriel's descent into villainy began long before his wife's disappearance. This reading suggests he may have been involved in the original attack on Fei's father's school, making him a more profoundly and premeditatedly evil character rather than a man driven solely by grief. This interpretation recasts his entire motivation throughout the series as something far more sinister than previously understood.
