Over eleven seasons, the series follows key narrative progression and character twists:
- Seasons 1–2: Mitchell and Cameron adapt to raising baby Lily; Phil constantly attempts to win Jay's approval; Gloria integrates Colombian traditions into Jay's life.
- Seasons 3–4: Claire runs for City Council and loses. Gloria gives birth to Fulgencio Joseph 'Joe' Pritchett.
- Season 5: Same-sex marriage becomes legal in California. Mitchell and Cameron plan their wedding, culminating in an emotional ceremony hosted by Jay at his golf club.
- Seasons 6–7: Jay officially retires from Pritchett's Closets & Blinds and names Claire as the new CEO. Phil and Claire adjust to Haley entering the professional world and dating Andy.
- Seasons 8–9: DeDe (Jay’s ex-wife) passes away, forcing the family to process long-standing emotional unresolved issues. Alex graduates from college.

- Series Finale Twists: Cameron is offered his dream position as a college football head coach in Illinois.
