To kill Carlos Kuhn, the gangster responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter; later, to keep a living child from becoming another body on the island.

Begins as a former detective who has already methodically killed everyone connected to his family's murder except its author, and who engineers his own imprisonment to reach the last one. Across the film he is drawn out of pure instrumentality by Maly and the child, shifting from a man executing a plan to a man defending people — without ever quite being redeemed or made whole. He ends the story alive but unplaced, still outside any ordinary world.

Absolute dominion over the only territory left to him, and the preservation of a power built entirely on the fear of those around him.

A reckless gangster whose crimes killed Yool's family, imprisoned on the island and, instead of being broken by it, seizing control of it. He does not develop so much as consolidate: each act of the film reveals how completely the prison has become his instrument, until the confrontation he has been waiting for arrives.

Keeping the child alive, and surviving in a society run by the men who would harm them both.

Introduced as an antagonist to Yool — she holds him responsible for her being on the island at all — she is a survivor who has organised her entire existence around protecting a child in a place with no protections. Her arc runs from open hostility to forgiveness once Yool spends himself saving the child, making her the film's moral register for whether the hero deserves anything.

The survival and advantage of his own group, whichever side that happens to require.

The leader of a marauding band scratching out an existence on the island's margins, Bao operates by opportunism rather than loyalty, which makes his alignment with or against Yool a running uncertainty. He provides the film's rare comic friction and embodies the island's middle class of scavengers — neither tyrants nor victims, simply people adapted to a rotten system.

Simple survival, and the ordinary need for safety in a place that offers none.

A child growing up inside a prison colony, under Maly's protection. They have no agency over the plot but function as its conscience: the moment Kuhn's men threaten them, the film's moral stakes stop being about the past and start being about whether anyone on the island will act for someone else.
