To recover the eagle of the Ninth and with it his father's name and his family's honor — a debt of shame he inherited rather than earned.

Begins as a rigidly correct young centurion who believes Rome's version of everything, including his own worth. Injury and discharge take away his path to redemption; the journey north takes away his power, his certainty, and eventually his illusions about his father and his empire. He ends having learned that the man beside him matters more than the emblem he came for.

Honoring a life-debt he never asked for, while remaining loyal to his own dead people and his own idea of freedom.

A Brigantian whose family was destroyed by Rome, saved from death in the arena by Marcus and bound to him as a slave. He moves from sullen obligation, through the dangerous ambiguity of the reversed roles beyond the Wall, to a chosen loyalty — and the film's central tension is that we can never be sure, until late, which way he will fall.

Survival, and the peace of being forgotten — until shame and old allegiance pull him back.

A ghost of the Ninth living in the north under a new name and a new life, he embodies the choice Marcus refuses to make: to let the legion, and Rome, go. Encountering him replaces Marcus's heroic fantasy of his father's legion with a bleaker truth, before Guern's own buried loyalty resurfaces at the climax.

To keep his nephew alive and to steer him toward an ordinary, survivable life.

The comfortable, ironic elder statesman at whose villa Marcus convalesces. He functions as the film's civilized counterweight, arguing for a life measured in pleasures and realities rather than symbols, and his failure to dissuade Marcus defines exactly how immovable his nephew is.

Doing the job, keeping men alive, and maintaining the garrison's order.

A career officer representing the army as it actually is — procedural, weary, unromantic. He measures Marcus's idealism against the practical business of holding a frontier, and stands for everything Marcus leaves behind when he crosses the Wall alone.
