The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is the fourth theatrical animated feature film in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, directed by series veteran Derek Drymon. The story opens in Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob SquarePants measures himself and discovers he is finally tall enough to ride the town's most fearsome amusement park roller coaster, the "Twisting Totem". However, when standing before the colossal ride, fear overtakes him. To hide his anxiety from Patrick, he makes an excuse, but his boss, Mr. Krabs, taunts him and Patrick for being "bubble-blowing baby boys" who lack the true grit of seafaring swashbucklers.
Desperate to prove his maturity and bravery to Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob inadvertently summons the legendary ghost pirate, the Flying Dutchman. The menacing spirit offers to take SpongeBob under his wing and train him to become a tough, fearless "big guy" on an epic voyage to the sea's deepest depths. Enticed by visions of swashbuckling bravado, SpongeBob—along with a blindly loyal Patrick Star—sets sail with the Dutchman's ghost crew into the Underworld.
Meanwhile, Mr. Krabs realizes that his harsh words pushed SpongeBob into grave danger. Wracked with guilt, Krabs teams up with Squidward Tentacles and Gary the Snail to launch a harrowing rescue operation. Their journey forces both teams through surreal ocean depths, chaotic encounters with mythical marine creatures, and unchartered realms as they race against time.
