Set three years after her heroic journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti, Moana 2 finds the young chieftess and master wayfinder Moana actively exploring the ocean around Motunui in hopes of finding other human communities. Her world expands dramatically when she receives a powerful vision from her ancestor, Tautai Vasa. He warns her that a vengeful storm god named Nalo has hidden and submerged the sacred island of Motufetu—the ancient nexus that once physically and spiritually connected all the scattered tribes of Oceania. If Motufetu remains lost, the distant peoples of the sea will stay eternally isolated and eventually fade into history.
Determined to break Nalo's curse and reconnect her heritage, Moana must assemble an unlikely crew of Motunui islanders: Loto, an inventive young shipbuilder; Moni, an enthusiastic historian and storyteller; and Kele, a grumpy, land-loving farmer. Joined by her beloved animal sidekicks Heihei and Pua, Moana sets sail into charted and uncharted waters alike. Her quest leads her across treacherous seas, through encounters with coconut-armored Kakamora, and into deep bioluminescent caverns where she seeks the aid of the legendary demigod Maui.
Together, the crew must overcome divine storms, deadly monsters, and mysterious enforcers to raise the sunken island. As external dangers multiply, Moana is forced to confront new dimensions of leadership, testing not only her navigational skills but her willingness to embrace the unknown in order to unite the vast ocean family.
