Set in late 1999 in the fictional coastal town of Haeseong City, The WONDERfools unfolds during the height of Y2K apocalyptic anxiety and end-of-the-world dread. The story centers on Eun Chae-ni, a fiery, cash-strapped 27-year-old living with a terminal congenital heart condition. Desperate to live out her bucket list before her time runs out, Chae-ni staged a fake kidnapping scheme alongside her two well-meaning but utterly incompetent friends, Son Gyeong-hun and Kang Ro-bin, to extort ransom money from her wealthy, stern grandmother. However, when Chae-ni collapses from a sudden heart attack mid-scheme, her panicked companions accidentally dump her body near a hidden chemical runoff site at the local garbage dump. Exposed to toxic laboratory waste, Chae-ni miraculously reawakens—and all three gain absurd, defect-ridden superpowers that are wildly difficult to control.
Their supernatural transformation is witnessed by Lee Un-jeong, a rigid, socially awkward city hall employee who transferred from Seoul and harbors secret telekinetic powers of his own. Un-jeong reluctantly steps in as a mentor to train the chaotic trio. As the gang struggles to manage their bizarre abilities, they discover that their town is being targeted by the Church of Eternal Salvation—an apocalyptic cult serving as a front for Dr. Ha Won-do, a disgraced mad scientist running illegal human mutation experiments. Over eight episodes, this band of local misfits evolves from self-interested losers into the unlikely 'Guardians of Haeseong City,' fighting to protect their home from a manufactured doom.
