Full Plot Breakdown & Twists: Valentina Allegra de Fontaine hires Yelena, John Walker, Ava Starr, and Taskmaster on separate contract assignments to retrieve research at an OXE facility in Malaysia. Once all operatives enter the central vault, Valentina locks them in and initiates an automated incinerator sequence to destroy evidence of her illegal super-soldier program, "Project Sentry". Taskmaster is killed/incapacitated during the initial scramble. The remaining team uncovers "Bob" (Robert Reynolds) trapped in stasis and manages to break out of the facility.
Rejoining Alexei Shostakov and Bucky Barnes, the team discovers Bob's dark secret: he was an ex-substance user who volunteered for Valentina's serum trials, becoming the sole survivor endowed with godlike powers as "Sentry". However, his suppressed trauma birthed "The Void"—a sentient shadow entity that takes control when Bob experiences intense distress, threatening to erase New York City.
The Climax & Ending: Rather than fighting Sentry physically, Yelena enters the psychological shadow-space of the Void to reach Bob trapped in his mental "attic" memory. By offering empathy and holding him while declaring "you are not alone," the Thunderbolts help Bob neutralize the darkness, rescuing New York.
When the team marches into Valentina's headquarters to expose her crimes, she ambushes them by pulling them onto a live international press conference, publicly introducing them as her handpicked "New Avengers". The "asterisk" in the title represents this stolen identity—forced to play public heroes while secretly working behind the scenes to hold Valentina accountable.
