Throughout the story, the father maintains the illusion that their island refuge is entirely safe as long as they adhere to drills and silence. In truth, the infection’s spread across the mainland has left few survivors, and the Breakers' hive intelligence is actively combing the coast.
The arrival of Rosie, who drifts to the island on a burning boat, serves as the narrative catalyst. While Willa welcomes her out of a desperate need for human connection, Rosie is already infected or tracked by the Breakers, unwittingly drawing the hybrid swarm directly to their sanctuary.
During the ensuing confrontation with invading Hybrids, the father suffers an injury and begins exhibiting early signs of the infection.
