#Alive — Ending Explained

After weeks of isolation, Joon-woo receives a brief restoration of mobile signal and listens to a recorded voicemail from his mother. Horrifying background screams confirm his parents and sister were killed by the infected. Overwhelmed, he attempts to hang himself, but Yoo-bin’s laser pointer stops him. The two coordinate via walkie-talkies and ziplines to share food.

When food runs out entirely, they make a desperate run to the 8th floor of Yoo-bin's complex, believing it to be empty. A horde pursues them, but they are pulled into an apartment by a middle-aged survivor (The Masked Man). He feeds them, but drugs their food.

The Twist: The Masked Man ties up Yoo-bin and pushes her into a bedroom to feed his infected, reined-in wife. Joon-woo wakes up and holds the man at gunpoint. Yoo-bin manages to break free and uses the wife's restraint to turn the zombie wife onto the Masked Man. The wife bites her husband, and Yoo-bin shoots both of them.

The Ending: The gunshots attract hundreds of zombies. Trapped, Joon-woo and Yoo-bin fight their way to the rooftop to make a final stand. Cornered at the ledge with zombies breaking down the door, they prepare to jump. Suddenly, a Republic of Korea Air Force rescue helicopter rises from below the roofline. Snipers aboard eliminate the horde, and the soldiers pull the leads to safety. On board, radio broadcasts reveal that military search teams were dispatched to locate survivors by scanning social media posts containing distress tags like #ALIVE. Joon-woo’s early live streams and hashtags directly saved their lives.
