Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ends with the complete disbanding of the original team, but not through death as many fans had feared. After the Guardians defeat the High Evolutionary—mauling him but leaving him to his fate on his exploding ship—they rescue all of his captive children and animals and bring them to Knowhere.
The emotional climax sees the team acknowledging their individual journeys are taking them in different directions. Peter Quill, accepting that the Gamora he loved is gone, decides to stop running from his past and returns to Earth to reunite with his grandfather. Mantis embarks on a solo journey of self-discovery. Drax finds a new purpose as a father to the rescued children on Knowhere, with Nebula staying to lead and build the new community. Gamora, having found her own family, rejoins the Ravagers. Peter names Rocket the new captain of the Guardians of the Galaxy before he leaves.
A mid-credits scene reveals the new Guardians roster led by Rocket, which includes a now-massive Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo the Spacedog, Adam Warlock, and the powerful young girl Phyla-Vell. A final post-credits scene shows Peter adjusting to a quiet, normal life on Earth with his grandfather, before a title card promises that "The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return."
