Overview

Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) is the fourth Ice Age film, from Blue Sky Studios. It was directed by Steve Martino and Michael Thurmeier. Manny and Ellie are now raising a teenage daughter, Peaches. Manny is exceedingly overprotective, and she pulls away from him toward a group of mammoths he doesn't trust. Sid's family also turns up, only to drop off the elderly Granny and leave.

Scrat's pursuit of his acorn then breaks the continents apart. Manny, Sid, Diego and Granny end up stranded on a drifting chunk of ice, separated from Ellie, Peaches and the others, who must cross a collapsing landscape toward a land bridge.

The castaways are taken aboard an iceberg pirate ship by the ape Captain Gutt, who wants to press them into his crew. What follows is a long voyage home. The film pairs it with a parallel story of a father and daughter who need to understand each other.

Core Meaning

The film argues that family is something you carry with you, not a place. Home can be physically destroyed, and the herd survives by choosing one another. Manny has to learn that protecting a child means trusting her, and Peaches has to learn the value of the loyalty she took for granted. The film also sets chosen family and loyalty against Gutt's rule by fear and exploitation.

Thematic DNA

Family and the bond between parent and child 35%
Home and change 20%
Loyalty and friendship 20%
Growing up and independence 15%
Tyranny versus freedom 10%

Family and the bond between parent and child

Manny's overprotectiveness drives his clashes with Peaches. His promise to find his family, however long it takes, drives the voyage. The story ends with him and Peaches reconciled.

Home and change

The continental break-up literally destroys the herd's homeland. They settle on a new island, which shows that home can be rebuilt wherever the family is.

Loyalty and friendship

Louis's line about never leaving a friend behind sums up the film's ethic. Gutt's crew, held by fear, contrasts with the voluntary loyalty of the herd.

Growing up and independence

Peaches wants to hang out with boys and to make her own choices. Her peer pressure subplot and her later bravery against Gutt show her maturing.

Tyranny versus freedom

Gutt rules by intimidation. Shira's break from him and the hyraxes' revolt against his rule show that fear-based power breaks down.

Philosophical Questions

When does protection become control?

Manny's caution stifles Peaches. Only after he almost loses her does he accept that trust is part of love.

What makes a home?

The herd's homeland is destroyed, yet they rebuild on an island together. The film suggests a home is made of people.

Can desire destroy what we love?

Scrat's acorn obsession breaks the continents and sinks Scratlantis. Gutt, too, is undone by a siren who takes the shape of what he desires.

How It Ends

Alternative Interpretations

Some read the film as a story about parental letting-go, with the continental break-up standing in for the rift between Manny and Peaches. Others see Gutt as a satire of vain, charismatic tyrants, since his death comes through his own vanity. Scrat's subplot can also be read as a parable about how one individual's greed upends the world.
