The late-season episodes unravel the karmic identities of the modern cast: Choi Mun-do is the modern reincarnation of King Anjong, the ruler who used Dan-shim as a pawn before ordering her death. Cha Se-gye is revealed to be Grand Prince Cheongheon (Yi Heon), who sacrificed his life trying to protect Dan-shim 300 years prior.
In Episode 13, Mun-do stabs Se-gye during a confrontation. Spiritual guide Geum Bosal reveals that Se-gye cannot survive modern medical treatment while the unresolved karmic trauma of his past death remains unaddressed. Dan-shim utilizes the red comet's passage to leap back to Joseon, where she intercepts the arrow intended for Prince Yi Heon.
This sacrifice breaks the metaphysical cycle: in modern Seoul, Se-gye awakens with his past memories intact, Mun-do is jailed for his crimes, and Dan-shim returns to modern times to reunite with Se-gye. Concurrently, an altered Joseon timeline shows the historical Dan-shim and Prince Yi Heon living in safety away from the court.
