In the near future, humanity faces the terrifying prospect of a global ice age. Dr. Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher turned molecular biologist, awakens from an induced coma aboard the interstellar spacecraft Hail Mary. Stripped of his memories and completely alone after the deaths of his two crewmates, Grace finds himself in the Tau Ceti solar system. As his memory returns in fragmented bursts, he realizes he is Earth's last hope to stop 'Astrophage', a mysterious, energy-consuming microorganism that is slowly dimming the Sun.
As Grace struggles to unravel the scientific puzzle required to save his home planet, the film shifts from a solitary survival thriller into an unexpected buddy-comedy. Grace encounters an alien spacecraft and makes first contact with its sole surviving engineer, a five-legged, spider-like being made of rocky material whom Grace affectionately names 'Rocky'. Despite immense biological and linguistic barriers, the two solitary scientists must combine their intellects to forge a solution that could save both of their dying worlds.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film balances high-stakes scientific problem-solving with the duo's signature wit. Through a non-linear narrative, the film peels back the layers of Grace's past on Earth, revealing the extreme measures taken by mission commander Eva Stratt to launch the Hail Mary, setting the stage for a climax that tests the true limits of bravery and friendship.
