Set in a small Pennsylvania town in the autumn of 1968, the film follows Stella, an aspiring writer, and a small group of friends. On Halloween night they sneak into the abandoned mansion of the town's founding family, which is rumored to be haunted. There Stella takes a handwritten book of horror stories belonging to Sarah Bellows, a local girl of legend.
The book is not dormant. New stories begin to write themselves in blood-red ink, and each one names a member of the group and describes a nightmare designed for them. The tales draw on well-known campfire folklore, and each brings its own monster to the town.
As the friends disappear one by one, Stella and the survivors must work out where the book came from and what Sarah wants. Behind the creature-feature scares sits a story about a town's buried secrets, set against the background of Vietnam and the 1968 election.
