Inspired by a Joseon-era historical tale from Yu Mong-in’s classic anthology Eou yadam, The Legend of the Blue Sea is a 20-episode fantasy romantic comedy drama that unfolds across two interconnected timelines. In late 16th-century Korea, Kim Dam-ryeong, a noble town magistrate, rescues and releases a captured mermaid named Se-hwa, blossoming into a deep, tragic romance thwarted by human greed and political malice.
Centuries later in modern-day Seoul and Spain, Heo Joon-jae is a brilliant, charming con artist who uses hypnosis and disguises to fleece corrupt elites. He encounters Shim Cheong, a naive yet physically powerful mermaid who has walked onto land to reunite with him. Initially targeting her valuable $6 million antique jade bracelet, Joon-jae takes her into his home, unaware of their ancient connection.
As Joon-jae begins experiencing vivid, recurring dreams sent as warnings from his past self, he unlocks the mystery of Dam-ryeong’s life. Together, Joon-jae and Shim Cheong must navigate modern corporate conspiracies, a ruthless stepmother, a murderous fugitive, and the biological countdown on a mermaid’s land-bound heart, striving to break the cycle of tragedy and rewrite their destiny.
