The film opens with Odin defeating Laufey and the Frost Giants in 965 A.D. and confiscating their Casket of Ancient Winters. Centuries later, during Thor's coronation, Frost Giants infiltrate Asgard's vault. Enraged, Thor defies Odin and leads an attack on Jotunheim. When a Frost Giant touches Loki's arm, Loki's flesh turns ice-blue without harm. Odin intervenes to rescue them, banishes the arrogant Thor to Earth, and places an enchantment of worthiness on Mjölnir.
On Earth, Thor discovers he cannot lift Mjölnir from a S.H.I.E.L.D. crater and collapses in despair. In Asgard, Loki discovers he is Laufey's biological son, rescued as an infant. The emotional strain causes Odin to enter the Odinsleep, leaving Loki as regent. Loki deceives Thor into believing Odin is dead and sends the automaton Destroyer to kill Thor and his allies on Earth. Thor confronts the Destroyer unarmed to protect innocent mortals; his self-sacrifice proves him worthy, restoring his divine powers and Mjölnir.
In the climax, Loki's true plan is revealed: he invites Laufey to Asgard only to assassinate him and look like Odin's savior, then aims the Bifröst at Jotunheim to commit genocide and prove his loyalty to Odin. Thor stops Loki by shattering the Bifröst with Mjölnir, cutting off his own bridge to Jane on Earth. When Odin awakens and rejects Loki's destructive actions, Loki lets go and falls into the cosmic abyss. The post-credits scene reveals Loki survived and is manipulating Dr. Erik Selvig as Nick Fury introduces the Tesseract.
