Welcome to Samdal-ri (2023–2024) is a 16-episode South Korean romantic comedy slice-of-life drama directed by Cha Young-hoon (When the Camellia Blooms) and written by Kwon Hye-joo (Hi Bye, Mama!). Set against the dramatic coastal scenery of Jeju Island, the series tells the story of two childhood soulmates whose lives diverged along radically different trajectories before unexpectedly reconverging at a crucial crossroads.
Cho Sam-dal, who operates in Seoul under the high-profile alias Cho Eun-hye, achieved her dream of becoming a top fashion photographer. However, when a malicious, fabricated scandal orchestrated by her jealous assistant destroys her career overnight, she experiences a devastating public fall from grace. Shamed and overwhelmed, Sam-dal flees back to her quiet birthplace—the small fishing village of Samdal-ri on Jeju Island—accompanied by her two sisters.
Upon returning, Sam-dal encounters her childhood best friend and ex-boyfriend, Cho Yong-pil, a dedicated and fiercely accurate local weather forecaster who chose to stay in Jeju to protect the elderly divers (haenyeo) of his community. Reconnecting after eight years of silence, the two navigate unresolved heartache, old family trauma, and deep-seated grudges within their tight-knit community. Across its narrative arc, the series explores how returning to one's roots, surrounded by family, lifelong friends, and natural rhythms, provides the space needed to heal, reclaim personal identity, and rediscover genuine love.
