Throughout the film, Lilian investigates Paula's death believing Paula was murdered by her husband Simon or daughter Valérie for an inheritance. However, the final act shatters Lilian's conspiracy theories with several major revelations:
- Paula's Actual Crime: Paula did commit murder—she poisoned her elderly aunt Pearl using prescription pills Lilian illegally provided to gain an inheritance, but was immediately consumed by catastrophic guilt.
- Paula's Suicide: Unable to live with her crime, Paula used the remaining pills to take her own life, leaving behind a scribbled confession note.
- The Stalker Unmasked: The mysterious figure harassing Lilian and stealing Paula's MiniDisc was Pierre—the disgruntled smoking-cessation patient desperate to recover evidence for his lawsuit.
- Simon's True Role: Simon was never a killer; he was simply an unfaithful, grieving husband who reacted with hostility because he knew Paula was unraveling and blamed Lilian’s poor care.
When Simon returns the missing tape, Lilian finally listens to Paula's true last words without bias. Realizing her entire murder investigation was a projection of her own unconscious guilt for breaking medical protocol and missing Paula's distress, Lilian accepts her human limitations, dismantles her MiniDisc setup, reconciles with her family, and re-opens her practice with genuine empathy.
