Abyss is a 16-episode South Korean fantasy crime romance that blends supernatural cosmology with murder mystery and romantic comedy. The series centers on Go Se-yeon, a brilliant and fiercely confident public prosecutor, and Cha Min, the kindhearted, highly intelligent, yet insecure heir to a cosmetics empire. Despite being lifelong friends, their dynamic has long been defined by social perceptions of physical beauty: Se-yeon was universally admired for her striking appearance, while Min was habitually ridiculed and dismissed for his plain looks.
Their earthly paths take an abrupt, fantastical detour when both meet untimely deaths in separate events. Reborn through a supernatural celestial object known as the "Abyss," both discover that their resurrected physical vessels now mirror the exact moral and spiritual nature of their souls. Cha Min transforms into an extraordinarily handsome young man, while Se-yeon is resurrected in a thoroughly "ordinary," petite guise.
Stripped of their former social privileges and legal identities—with Min framed as the primary suspect in Se-yeon’s apparent homicide—the duo must navigate living under borrowed identities. As they pursue the elusive serial murderer responsible for Se-yeon's death, they must grapple with the unpredictable, high-stakes rules governing the revival marble, finding their friendship transforming into a profound, transcendent romance along the way.
