Directed and written by Lee Chung-hyun, Ballerina (2023) is a South Korean action-thriller centered on Jang Ok-ju, a quiet, hardened former VIP bodyguard whose life of emotional isolation is briefly illuminated when she reconnects with her childhood friend, Choi Min-hee. Min-hee, a talented and gentle ballerina, offers Ok-ju a glimpse of warmth and human connection that she had never experienced in her brutal line of work. However, this newfound solace is shattered when Ok-ju arrives at Min-hee’s apartment to find her friend dead by suicide in her bathtub. Left behind in Min-hee's pointe shoes box is a final, desperate plea asking Ok-ju to destroy the man who ruined her life.
Driven by grief and love, Ok-ju embarks on an uncompromising crusade through South Korea’s illegal underworld. She discovers that Min-hee was victimized by Choi Pro—a suave, sadistic drug dealer and human trafficker who secretly films women, uses illicit substances to subdue them, and blackmails them into compliance. Utilizing her lethal military training, tactical weaponry, and cold determination, Ok-ju systematically hunts down Choi Pro and his criminal syndicate, infiltrating underground nightclubs and hidden laboratories to exact absolute retribution.
