The Impostor Scheme: Throughout the story, Detective Won-ho operates under the premise that Brian Lee (Cha Seung-won) is attempting to pose as the elusive Mr. Lee. Brian stages brutal actions to consolidate power.

The Brutal Retribution on Brian: Rak lures Brian into an ambush orchestrated with the deaf-mute siblings. In a horrific act of symbolic justice, Rak severely burns Brian's back—inflicting the exact same burns suffered by Rak's dog in the opening blast. Rak leaves Brian alive but disfigured, leaving him behind for Won-ho to arrest as the public ‘Mr. Lee’.

The True Identity of Mr. Lee: Rak is not a lowly courier; he is the true ‘Mr. Lee’. He arrived in South Korea as an undocumented orphan aboard a cargo container of drugs and bananas, adopting the identity of a deceased child named Seo Young-rak. Recognizing that maintaining absolute anonymity was the only way to remain invincible, Rak intentionally built a decentralized myth around ‘Mr. Lee,’ allowing reckless executives to take the fall while he maintained full operational control alongside his mute chemists.

The Final Encounter in Norway: Won-ho realizes the truth after finding the GPS tracker placed on Rak’s dog, tracking Rak to a remote snowbound cabin in Norway. Rather than engaging in an immediate firefight, the two men sit down for coffee. Won-ho confronts Rak not with rage, but with profound exhaustion, asking if Rak has ever been happy. The theatrical cut cuts to an exterior shot of the cabin as a single gunshot reverberates, leaving the exact fatal consequence ambiguous.

The theatrical cut of Believer ends ambiguously with a gunshot outside the Norwegian cabin, yielding four main interpretations:

• Won-ho Kills Rak: The traditional justice interpretation where Won-ho fulfills his duty by eliminating the real Mr. Lee and dismantling the syndicate.
• Won-ho Dies by Suicide: The existential/nihilistic reading where Won-ho realizes catching Mr. Lee solved nothing, brought no peace, and that he himself became a monster. With his life’s purpose hollowed out, he turns the gun on himself.
• Rak Kills Won-ho: Rak eliminates the only law enforcer who knows his true face, preserving his mythical status while living in peace.
• The Extended Cut Resolution: The July 2018 extended release provides a concrete conclusion showing Won-ho walking out of the cabin alone into the snow with blood splatters on his face, confirming Rak was killed.
