Christy (2025), directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, is a biographical sports drama that chronicles the meteoric rise and harrowing personal struggles of trailblazing boxer Christy Martin (née Salters). Set against the backdrop of working-class West Virginia in the late 1980s and 1990s, the narrative begins as young Christy discovers her formidable natural talent for punching inside local Toughman contests.
Seeking a path out of her small town, Christy enters an alliance with seasoned trainer James V. "Jim" Martin. Under the showmanship of legendary promoter Don King, she is propelled to the pinnacle of mainstream combat sports, gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated and commanding national pay-per-view audiences as the self-proclaimed "Coal Miner’s Daughter".
However, the film sharply contrasts her triumphs inside the squared circle with the severe perils of her domestic life. As Christy grapples with her closeted sexuality, conservative familial expectations, and Jim’s increasingly paranoid, coercive, and violent control, her hardest fight unfolds far away from the arena lights.
