Embrace of the Serpent - Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Analysis

The Twist: The search for the Yakruna is not just for a plant, but for the restoration of Karamakate's soul. In the end, it is revealed that Young Karamakate destroyed all the Yakruna plants in 1909 to keep them from the white men.
The Ending: In 1940, Old Karamakate reveals he saved one last Yakruna flower on a distant mountain. He prepares it for Evan. Evan drinks it and has a cosmic, psychedelic vision (shown in color). When he wakes, Karamakate is gone. The implication is that by passing his knowledge to Evan, Karamakate finally ceased to be a chullachaqui and was able to move on to the next plane. Evan is left alone, transformed, now carrying the burden and gift of the Cohiuano wisdom.

Alternative Interpretations

The Chullachaqui Theory: Some critics interpret the entire 1940 timeline as a journey of a "ghost." Since Old Karamakate claims he is a chullachaqui (empty shell), perhaps the "real" Karamakate died long ago, and Evan is interacting with the lingering spirit of the jungle's memory.
Evan as Theo's Reincarnation: The film hints that Evan is not just a successor but a spiritual continuation of Theo. Karamakate treats them as two halves of the same soul; Theo failed the trial, so Evan returned to complete it. The "two men" Karamakate speaks of could be the duality within one eternal Western soul seeking redemption.
