How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming - Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Analysis

The film's plot is driven by the fact that Hiccup and Astrid's children, Zephyr and Nuffink, have grown to fear dragons after discovering Stoick's old journals filled with fearful depictions. To correct this, Hiccup and Gobber stage a Snoggletog pageant to reenact the story of peace between Vikings and dragons. The play is comically inaccurate and chaotic, culminating in the stage catching fire.

Simultaneously, Toothless's curious offspring, the Night Lights, fly from the Hidden World to New Berk, with their parents in pursuit. During the pageant's fiery climax, Hiccup falls from the stage, only to be saved by the real Toothless, who has been watching from afar. Cloaked in smoke, Toothless steps in for the mechanical dragon costume and helps Gobber reenact the tender moment of his first bonding with Hiccup, reminding everyone of their friendship. After the show, Zephyr comes face-to-face with Toothless, and her fear turns to wonder. The two families share a brief, silent reunion before Toothless and his family return to the Hidden World, reaffirming their unbreakable bond across the distance and inspiring Hiccup's family to plan a visit of their own.
