The film opens with a cold open at a public pool, where a young lifeguard (Tyallah Bullock) is seduced and killed by an unseen force in the shower.
Naim Reid moves to regional Victoria with his mother Arlene following his father's death. He forms a bond with Ryan Whelan, culminating in a passionate encounter in an abandoned mill. Shortly after, Naim catches Ryan kissing Hunter (Jeremy Blewitt), the son of Pastor Rod. In a fit of teenage jealousy and feeling betrayed, Naim vengefully outs Ryan and Hunter to Pastor Rod.
Pastor Rod calls in a "Deliverance Healer" (Nicholas Hope), who subjects Ryan and Hunter to an aggressive exorcism ritual. The ritual summons a supernatural entity that haunts each boy by manifesting as the person they are most attracted to. Hunter is soon lured away and killed by the entity disguised as his crush.
Realizing Naim is also involved, Arlene forces her son to undergo the deliverance ritual as well. The entity now stalks Naim disguised as Ryan, and stalks Ryan disguised as Naim. When Naim uses fire to burn the creature during an attack, he confront Arlene, who admits that the spiritual damage inflicted by the healer is "irreversible".
Naim and Ryan realize that separating will not break the curse; if they move on, the entity will simply take the form of whoever they fall in love with next. Choosing connection over fear, Naim abandons his mother, reunites with Ryan, and together they board a bus out of town. The final shot shows them sitting together sharing headphones, choosing to face the entity as a united pair.
