Sekirei (2008–2010) is a two-season supernatural action-comedy TV anime adapted from Sakurako Gokurakuin’s manga by studio Seven Arcs. The story takes place in a near-future Tokyo known as "Teito," where 19-year-old Minato Sahashi is struggling with life after failing his college entrance examinations for a second time. His trajectory changes drastically when a mysterious girl named Musubi literally falls from the sky into his arms while running from aggressive pursuers. Minato discovers that Musubi is a "Sekirei"—a superpowered extraterrestrial being—and that he possesses the rare "Ashikabi" gene, granting him the ability to unlock her latent powers through a ritualistic "winging" kiss.
Unbeknownst to Minato, the powerful mega-corporation Mid Bio Informatics (MBI), spearheaded by the eccentric billionaire Hiroto Minaka, has initiated the "Sekirei Plan." This high-stakes urban battle royale forces 108 Sekirei and their chosen human Ashikabi partners to fight across Teito until only one standing pair remains. Minato, whose compassionate nature makes him reluctant to engage in violence, finds himself taking residence at Izumo Inn—a boarding house run by the formidable Miya Asama that acts as a neutral sanctuary. Over time, Minato unknowingly draws multiple un-winged Sekirei to his side, creating a devoted flock while defending them from ruthless rival Ashikabi and corporate traps.
Across both seasons (Sekirei and Sekirei: Pure Engagement), the narrative escalates from lighthearted harem antics and initial skirmishes into an all-out urban war. As MBI shifts the game into more dangerous stages, Minato and his flock are forced to confront dark corporate secrets, tragic betrayals, and the true, oppressive nature of the Sekirei Plan, ultimately standing together to forge their own path toward freedom.
